Our early childhood education program is designed to ensure that every child aged 3 to 6 has a safe, healthy, and opportunity-filled start in life.

In the Pirita community, many children reach school age without stable routines, without educational support at home, and without the experience of kindergarten — the place where they begin to discover the world, friendship, rules, and confidence in themselves.

From segregation to normality: a necessary step toward equity

At present, preschool children from the Pirita community are segregated based on their background: they all attend the same group, in a building separated from the rest of the kindergarten children.

This separation limits friendship, social learning, and exposure to a diverse environment — and makes young children feel, from a very early age, that they do not belong in the same place as others.

Through this program, we aim to break this cycle of exclusion.

We want to ensure that:

  • children can be enrolled in mainstream kindergartens, alongside non-Roma children;
  • parents from the Pirita community have the confidence to take this step;
  • parents of other children accept them without fear or prejudice;
  • educators understand the context and needs of children from marginalized communities, so they can support them on a daily basis;
  • the transition is gentle, natural, and safe, so that no child feels excluded or overwhelmed.

True inclusion begins in kindergarten. This is where children learn what belonging, acceptance, and equity truly mean.

What we offer children (ages 3–6)

  • Educational activities in a welcoming and child-friendly space within the Community Center
  • Daily routines focused on learning, play, and autonomy during school holidays
  • Development of language, socio-emotional skills, and motor abilities
  • Shared breakfast and material support to ensure regular participation
  • Individualized educational plans and progress assessments
  • Supported transition to kindergartens in the city

What we offer parents

  • Parental education (individual and group sessions)
  • Home-based mentoring to support simple learning routines at home
  • Mixed support groups (parents from Pirita and parents from the city) to reduce stigma
  • Parent–child workshops that strengthen emotional bonds
  • Essential supplies and material support for continuity (clothing, hygiene products, food)

Parents become active partners in their children’s education.

What we offer educators

  • Training and mentoring for working with children from vulnerable backgrounds
  • Workshops on cultural mediation, empathy, and adapting educational content
  • Community visits to better understand the children’s social context
  • Adapted educational materials for working with families
  • Professional reflection and peer-support groups

These interventions help reduce prejudice and foster inclusive classrooms where every child feels welcome.

Why this program matters

In the absence of dedicated support:
  • many children from the Pirita community do not attend kindergarten,
  • they experience developmental delays,
  • they feel excluded from the group,
  • parents lack information and resources,
  • educators are not prepared to address the specific needs of these children.

Through the “My Family Goes to Kindergarten” program, children:

  • discover the joy of learning,
  • build confidence and autonomy,
  • enter kindergarten better prepared,
  • reduce educational gaps,
  • integrate more easily into kindergarten groups.

The change we are building

At the end of the intervention, we aim to see:
  • children who are emotionally, socially, and cognitively prepared for group settings;
  • confident, informed, and engaged parents;
  • educators who are open, context-aware, and prepared for inclusion;
  • mixed, diverse, and equitable kindergarten groups;
  • a community where all children have the same right to early education.

Because every child deserves a place at the heart of the community.
Not on the margins.
