A conversation that changes lives.
For many girls from vulnerable communities, menstruation comes without explanations, without support, and without a safe space where they can ask questions. It comes with shame, silence, and sometimes with absences from school. It arrives at a moment when childhood should be met with care, not fear.
We met girls who did not know what was happening to their bodies, girls who thought there was something “wrong” with them, girls who missed classes because they did not have access to basic hygiene products or because the pain was too difficult to manage.
For them, menstruation was not just a natural stage of growing up, but the first moment when inequality became visible.
This is where our commitment began: to strengthen our program dedicated to girls by including menstrual health education as a core component.
At Pirita Children Association, we believe that every girl has the right to grow up informed, healthy, and confident in her own body.
We believe that menstrual education is not an “awkward” topic, but a form of care, respect, and prevention. And we know that information alone, no matter how important, is not enough without concrete support.
That is why our program combines menstrual health education with material support tailored to the real needs of girls.
We are able to provide sanitary pads on a monthly basis or whenever needed, personal hygiene products and underwear, as well as medication to help relieve menstrual pain.
For girls who do not have consistent access to adequate hygiene conditions, we prioritize their use of the washing machines at the community center and ensure access to the community showers.
These are simple things, but essential ones — the difference between shame and safety, between absence and being present at school.
As part of the program, girls take part in menstrual health education workshops adapted to their age and life context.
In a safe, empathetic, and non-judgmental space, they can ask questions, speak openly about their bodies, and discover that they are not alone. Gradually, shame turns into courage, and silence into dialogue.
We talk openly about menstruation and bodily health, challenge myths and fears, and together build a language for expressing personal experiences, boundaries, and needs.
Alongside ongoing emotional support, access to essential products and services allows girls to go through this stage of life with greater dignity and safety—without menstruation becoming a reason for withdrawal or dropping out of school.

An important part of this effort is our collaboration with Asociația Pe Stop, whose expertise in menstrual health education strengthens and complements our community-based interventions.
Together, we normalize conversations about menstruation, challenge stigma, and uphold girls’ right to information, health, and dignity.
The results go beyond numbers.
They can be seen in girls who dare to speak openly.
In those who come to school with greater confidence.
In the assurance with which they understand their bodies and express their needs.
They are also visible in relationships with families and the wider community, where acceptance and understanding grow step by step.
For us, menstrual education is an essential step toward gender equality and a long-term commitment to girls from vulnerable communities.
It is about offering not only information, but also concrete care, real support, and a sense of belonging.
At the beginning of this year, we continue to stand by them.
Because every girl deserves to grow up without shame, without fear, and with a real chance to continue her education.
Every open conversation, every hygiene product provided, and every girl who comes to school with greater confidence are small steps toward a big change.
Our program exists thanks to people who choose to believe in girls’ right to education, health, and dignity.
If you would like to stand with us, you can support the program through donations, direct involvement, or by sharing our story further.
Together, we can ensure consistent access to menstrual education, hygiene products, emotional support, and basic living conditions for girls from vulnerable communities.
Because every girl deserves to grow up without shame, without fear, and with a real chance to build her future.
And change begins with us — together.
