Socio-medical support and parental education for the most vulnerable members of the Pirita community

The “Mothers with Babies” program was launched in 2019 as an emergency response to the extremely difficult situations faced by children aged 0–3 in the Pirita community. With limited access to medical services, information, and basic conditions for infant care, most mothers were confronting serious risks to their children’s health.

In 2022, with the support of the “În stare de bine” program funded by Kaufland, we were able to establish a socio-medical center close to the community, allowing mothers to receive timely, consistent support tailored to their real needs.

Today, thanks to a grant provided by Eaton, the program continues and expands, becoming one of our most important interventions focused on early childhood — a decisive period for health, development, and safety.

Purpose of the program

To support mothers in the Pirita community in raising their babies in safer and healthier conditions, with access to:

  • basic medical services
  • tailored parental education
  • essential material support
  • mediation with public institutions
  • accurate information on early childhood development

Program objectives

The program aims to prevent situations of vulnerability by providing a comprehensive socio-medical support system for all children aged 0–3 and their mothers, through:
  • Establishing and operating a community-based socio-medical center dedicated to mothers and babies
  • Increasing access to medical services, monitoring, and parental education through weekly sessions
  • Building partnerships with local institutions to combat discrimination and improve access to services
  • Raising awareness within the Pirita community and the wider public about the risks and vulnerabilities faced by children born into extreme poverty

What we do in practice

A safe and welcoming space

We have set up and equipped a space dedicated to mothers with babies —

a socio-medical center where they can receive immediate and ongoing support.

Weekly support for mothers and children

Each week, the program provides:

  • monitoring of babies’ health
  • parental education and practical demonstrations on infant care
  • information on health, nutrition, hygiene, and child development
  •  support packages including food, diapers, hygiene products, and medication

Mediation with the medical and social systems

We ensure that mothers are able to register their babies with a family doctor and access consultations, treatment, and follow-up care. We work closely with:

  • family doctors
  • public health specialists
  • social workers
  • family planning services
  • the county hospital

A network of professionals

The program connects professionals and institutions to build a real support ecosystem:

  • 20 medical professionals
  • 10 professionals from social services and child protection

have received information and practical tools related to the challenges faced by children aged 0–3 in Pirita.

Result:

  • A fully operational socio-medical centerA dedicated, equipped, and active space providing integrated services for mothers and children.
  • 30 mothers and 40 children directly supportedRegular participation in medical, educational, and support activities.
  • Monthly parental education for 30 mothersCovering topics such as early childhood development, infant care, nutrition, and disease prevention.
  • Collaboration with all 8 family doctors involvedResulting in clearer procedures, faster access to consultations, and improved treatment monitoring.
  • Monthly activities for adolescent girls (14+)Delivered in partnership with family planning services, addressing puberty, hygiene, contraception, STI prevention, and reproductive counseling.
  • Partnership with DAS Baia Mare – medical servicesFocused on risk prevention and rapid intervention in emergency situations.
  • Involvement of a volunteer lactation specialistA pharmacist specialized in lactation provides individual and group breastfeeding counseling.
  • Collaboration with the social work department of the county hospitalSupporting a volunteer program dedicated to parental education.

Why the “Mothers with Babies” program is vital

The first three years of life shape a child’s entire future — health, development, attachment, and learning.

In Pirita, children are born into severe poverty, without access to medical services, basic resources, or reliable information.

Without early intervention, the risks are significant: serious illness, malnutrition, developmental delays, neglect, and infant mortality.

For many mothers and babies in the community, our program is often the only source of support.
