A program dedicated to girls from the Pirita community — education, protection, confidence, and empowerment.

“The School of Courage” is a program launched in 2023, created in response to the multiple vulnerabilities faced by girls in the Pirita community.

The program provides education, emotional support, practical activities, and information about children’s rights and protection from abuse — all within a safe, non-discriminatory, and empowering environment.

Why is this program necessary?

In the Pirita community, there are 42 girls aged between 6 and 18, of whom 34 attend school.

Although they are enrolled in the association’s general programs, girls have distinct needs that require a specific, targeted approach.

Identified vulnerabilities

  • In many families, girls have a lower status and are exposed to excessive control, shame, and early sanctions.

  • At the community level, they are excluded from decision-making processes, sent to beg, or subjected to arranged marriages.
  • Although they attend school, girls are placed in segregated classes and lack friendships within the educational environment.
  • There are cases of early motherhood and tragic pregnancy losses at very young ages.
  • No girl has access to her own personal space — a bed, a wardrobe, or personal belongings.
  • All girls take on caregiving responsibilities for their younger siblings.
  • Topics related to menstruation, hygiene, and reproductive health are considered taboos within families.
  • Many girls experience health and nutritional problems because they eat last within the household.
  • All of these experiences profoundly affect self-esteem, confidence, and self-image.

These realities clearly show that girls in Pirita need a program dedicated specifically to them — a safe space where they are protected, valued, and encouraged to build a different future.

How we support girls in the School of Courage

Integrated educational activities

The program supports girls’ development across five key areas:

Physical – health education

Cognitive – homework support, literacy, creative activities

Language – communication, self-expression, vocabulary development

Emotional – identifying and managing emotions, building self-esteem

Social – collaboration, friendship, conflict reduction

Practical activities through cooking

Girls learn to:

prepare healthy meals,

work as a team,

develop healthy eating routines and habits.

These activities increase autonomy and provide useful skills for future professional opportunities.

Workshops focused on protection and rights

Girls learn about:

their rights,

protection mechanisms against abuse,

personal boundaries,

healthy and safe relationships.

Program development in 2024–2025

In 2024, we placed a strong focus on empowerment activities: girls learned about their rights, practiced asserting them, and actively participated in their own choices.

They worked on expressing their opinions, taking initiative, and strengthening confidence in their own abilities.

Also in 2024, we introduced a set of activities dedicated to relaxation and exploring life beyond the community. Girls took part in trips, hikes, visits, and social activities—experiences that fostered a sense of belonging to a wider community and showed them that their place is not limited to the outskirts of the city.

In 2025, the program expanded with two essential components developed in partnership with the PeStop Association.

These components are vital for protecting girls and for building a generation that knows and claims its rights.

Menstrual health education

Workshops covering:

menstrual hygiene,

myths and facts,

access to appropriate products,

normalizing conversations about menstruation.

Consent and safety course

Girls learn about:

personal boundaries,

consent,

healthy relationships,

abuse prevention.

Partners and collaborators

The program is supported in collaboration with:

  • Baia Mare City Hall – Social Assistance Department

  • Maramureș County Prefecture

  • Baia Mare Local Council

  • Love2Share Association

  • Hope and Homes for Children Romania Foundation

  • Somaschi Foundation

  • PeStop Association

Safe spaces for development

To better support children, we propose the creation of two dedicated spaces:

Space for sports and physical activity

Girls learn about:

A mini gym equipped with wall bars, mats, and movement games, ideal for:

physical activities,

energy release and relaxation exercises,

increasing motivation for school.

“Alternative” Reading Club

Girls learn about:

A warm, creative, and safe space where all children from the city — not only those from Pirita — can take part in activities that encourage reading, imagination, and social inclusion.

Why this program matters

One of the most effective ways to combat segregation and discrimination is to create spaces where vulnerable children feel safe, seen, and valued.

The School of Courage offers girls from Pirita exactly what is often missing at home and in the community:

protection,

confidence,

autonomy,

positive role models,

real opportunities,

the belief that their lives can be different.
